Soul In The Basement W/ Russia & Hoi Polloi

Cherry Bar's legendary Soul In The Basement night is hosting local funk & jazz legends Hoi Polloi and Russia for a one night only special event.
*Hoi Palloi*
Hoi Palloi make zingy moody art-folk/alt-jazz, and have been playing their songs to Melbourne band rooms for a year or so. Their music speaks of the ocean, belonging, displacement and feeling lots of things all at once; and this thematic content is cuddled up in textural grooves and lush harmony. After hooking up with Sofar Sounds to record a live video for their song 'Tasmania', they released their debut EP 'Beneath the Quiet Insulation of the Stars' with a huge show at the Toff last month.
*Russia*
While their name is Russia they hail from Melbourne. When you hear them you'll know that their sound is an ode to the funk of old while forging a contemporary footpath weaved with pop elements. Hearing them, however, is only half the experience. To truly understand the power of Russia, one must put down the laptop, go to their show and be engrossed in a high energy charismatic experience. Gone are the days of the mild mannered shoe-gazers.
Now is the time of the front man.
Now is the reign of Russia.

SATURDAY MATINEE W/ DEAD CITY RUINS

Support: Two Headed Dog
Dead City Ruins are 5 young men from Croydon, Melbourne, Australia, and they play Rock ‘n’ Roll like their lives depend on it.

If you can imagine Black Sabbath, Early 80’s Iron Maiden and Phil Lynott era Thin Lizzy, thrown in a blender alongside antipodean grit, sweat and a fountain of beers, you’re getting close to the in your face, high energy live show delivered at brain splitting decibels these guys produce.

DCR was formed in 2010, when Lead Singer Jake Wiffen arrived home from UK. Disillusioned with the lack of commitment and work ethic many of his musical peers in the British Isles, but inspired by the vibrant Pan-European Rock and Metal scene, He set out on a mission to secure a lineup with the kind of musical DNA the Southern Hemisphere is renown for. Before the end of the year he had the commitment of four of the finest musical wingmen in the state of Victoria and that lineup drew first blood by launching headfirst into the studio to lay down ‘Midnight Killer’ Their debut released in early 2011.

Side stepping the notion of settling down and becoming another ‘local band’, Dead City Ruins began their global manifesto in earnest, booking just 4 x shows and 5 one way tickets to Europe before even releasing the album in Australia. There began a catalogue of blind luck, drama and ultimately, victory as the band toured hand to mouth in the northern hemisphere for the better part of 2 years, Defiantly keeping a run down Ford Transit on life support whilst living in a combination of tents, makeshift roadside shelters and the floors of those who would fall for their many charms.

Drunk Mums ‘Urban Cowboy’ Tour

W/ Special Guests
Melbourne rockers Drunk Mums have returned with a rejuvenated take on the leather clad, boisterous brand of punk rock that has been having fans frothing, with a brand new album in URBAN COWBOY.
Such a return has been marked by a rollicking new single in PHANTOM LIMB - a perfect example of Drunk Mums. new output: catchy, frenzied and steeped in rich riffs and grit. To celebrate the release of Urban Cowboy, Drunk Mums are going to be heading out on the road, taking in venues on the east coast with the most ideal tour partners - New York ͛s own, Dirty Fences
The band͛s central ethos of presenting no-holds-barred rock music in its most undiluted form has continued to shine with͚ Phantom Limb and throughout Urban Cowboy, and has shown that Drunk Mums͛ time on the road over the last few years has most certainly added to the finessing of this sound.
Make no mistake, Drunk Mums haven͛t lost any of their cheekiness or rambunctious swagger, but this new music positions the band in a more developed creative space. Rhythmic, forceful and sonically bright, the new music from Drunk Mums is a heavy dose of rock music that the band is stoked to be unveiling later this year. Recorded by bass player Adam Ritchie and mastered by Mikey Young, Drunk Mums laid this new music down in May after spending April writing and developing new ideas.

Half [of it] sounds like what our dads would have listened to, and the other half is what our younger fans would chuck on..

Señor No

SEÑOR NO was born in Donostia/San Sebastian, Basque Country (Spain) in 1993, after the dissolution of the seminal Spanish group La Perrera.

The band released their first LP with ‘No Tomorrow Records’ in 1994 and toured Spain and surrounding areas relentlessly while recording 5 more albums and more than a dozen singles. Senor No was the very first release for the seminal Spanish label Bang! records which is a label responsible of releasing some of Australian best bands overseas.

Their Sound is a hybrid of Motorhead, the MC5, Dead Boys and a strong vibe of Australian influences like New Christs, Bored!, The Saints and the Celibate Rifles. 25 years later Xabi (vocals and guitar) continues leading the band;s current lineup, which consists on Fumai (Bass) Fosy (Drums) and Jorge Colldan (Guitar).

It is this lineup that has recorded their latest album “No Cambies Siempre” (FOLC Records), which is considered their best work to date. Juan Iturrarte - Bang! Records (CEO): ‘Señor No are a real live act. Attending one of their concerts is a true rock´n´roll experience. No shit. You´re being ran over by a drunken bulldozer driving 100 miles per hour, song after song. Señor No are one of our favourite bands, an honest and sincere rock act, and we strongly recommend them and their concerts.’

Absolutely Live – The Doors Show

Absolutely Live –The Doors Show

The ceremony began in 1965, was reinvented in 1992 and now in 2017 Absolutely Live The Doors Show celebrates the psychedelic era that was the 1960s. Absolutely Live The Doors Show recreate the energy that existed in a 1960s arena concert. They are dedicated to raising the energy of the room and sustaining that energy, so that the crowd can open their own doors of perception and thus feel a release of free and primal exhilaration through engagement with the music.

The Doors and the songs of The Doors are powerful metaphors for freedom of expression. The songs were given their birth in the ͚ 60s, when substantial world events brought about changes in western culture because people needed avenues to express their new ideas of freedom.

Reformed in 2010 and playing to sold out shows in Melbourne at The Espy and Trak, in Perth at The Charles Hotel, and in Adelaide at the famous Spiegel Tent, Absolutely Live The Doors Show will set your night on fire. Carefully orchestrated production including stage projections set the scene. Lead singer Tony Dee aka Jim Morrison works the crowd from the opening number of Riders on the Storm to Morrison's spine chilling poetry Celebration of the Lizard King to the final number of either LA Woman or Roadhouse Blues, this band knows how to bring the audience to a high pitched crescendo, and they love it!
Don't miss their extraordinary performance!

Kai’s music is pure Americana, and combines elements of blues, country and rock, with a wide range of influences that include Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Jimi Hendrix, Taj Mahal and Keb Mo.

The brief hiatus from the music business now over, Kai looks forward to resuming his career with the renewed passion and energy that comes from the peace of having followed his own path, in his own time.

“I never stopped playing and writing,” says Kai. “Having children has definitely inspired me with music and in life in general. I feel like I’m writing and playing the best I ever have and am really excited about getting back into the studio and out on the road to do live shows.”

He has also come to terms with his father’s legacy. Musicians who also happen to be the progeny of famous rock stars often try to avoid direct association or comparison with their parents’ achievements. This arises out of a fully understandable desire to have their talents assessed on their own respective merits. Kai Clark will always be the son of Gene Clark, founder member of The Byrds, but he has also embarked upon a musical career that both openly embraces his father’s legacy, while simultaneously furthering his own unique vision.

“I have a better knowledge and respect for my father’s music,” says Kai. “I love playing his songs – which I never really pursued much in the past, mainly because of my own prolific writing. No matter where life will take me from here, I will always write and play music. It is as much a part of me as the blood that runs through my veins.”
